Clothing Donation Program
The Clothing Donation Program is a fundraising activity that benefits
the programs and services of MSAA, while also contributing to the national
goals for increased awareness of the environment and the need to recycle.
Last year, MSAA’s Clothing Donation Program raised tens of thousands
of dollars to meet the needs of our clients.
If you are cleaning out closets or down-sizing the amount of clutter
in your home, your used clothing and shoes
that remain in good condition and that are
clean and re-wearable will benefit MSAA’s Clothing
Donation Program.
We accept women’s, men’s, and children’s
clothing in addition to other textile items
such as curtains, sheets, towels,
blankets etc. that can be re-used.
MSAA has
over 100 collection bins placed throughout
New Jersey and Pennsylvania and we are expanding
our network of easily identifiable collection
bins with the colorful MSAA logo on the front
and “Clothing Donations” clearly printed on the side panels.
The collection boxes are emptied on an average
of every three days.
The clothing items donated
to this program are classified by the Council
for Textile Recycling as “post-consumer
textile waste” and consist of any type of garments or household
articles, made of some manufactured textiles,
that the owner no longer needs and decides
to discard. These articles are discarded either
because they are worn out, damaged, outgrown,
or have gone out of fashion. MSAA prefers that
these are placed in the MSAA Clothing Recycling Bins
rather than disposed of into the trash and
end up in municipal landfills.
An average family can
collect between 4-10 bags of clothing each
year. Post-consumer textile product waste comprises
about 4.5 percent of the residential waste
stream, which translates into approximately
35 pounds per person, totaling 8.75 billion
pounds. Statistics collected by
the Council for Textile Recycling report
almost half (48 percent) of the post-consumer
textile waste that is recovered is recycled
as secondhand clothing. Approximately 20 percent
of the material processed becomes wiping and
polishing cloths. Finally, 26 percent of this
post-consumer
waste is converted into fiber to be used in
products similar in nature to those manufactured
from pre-consumer textile waste.*

You may help the expansion of this program by requesting the placement of a clothing recycling box on your property.
The maintenance, regular collections and other matters concerning the clothing boxes will be handled by Worldwide Recycling, the MSAA's partner in this program. To have a collection box placed on your property, the property or business owner must approve a bin for that site.
