Support Groups

What are MSAA Support Groups?

MSAA support groups provide safe environments where people, who have or are affected by multiple sclerosis, gather to learn, share, build friendships, and help themselves and others. Support groups usually meet once a month and draw from a certain geographic region. Meetings are usually held in a central and accessible location. Attendance can range from a minimum of four to an average of 15-20. MSAA support groups are not designed to be counseling or therapy sessions.

Our support groups take on many forms based on various activities. One month the group may focus on information, the next month members may host a picnic. The direction taken and the activities chosen are determined by the group's membership. Common activities, which can vary from month-to-month, include:

  • Information Sharing - where members share the latest updates on MS research and treatments, coping skills, disability issues, stress management techniques, etc. Guest speakers are often invited to talk about a specific area of expertise;
  • Problem Solving - where common problems and life situations are discussed in a supportive, caring, and non-judgmental environment. Members share their stories of personal success as a way to help others to solve problems;
  • Morale Boosting - where fun, social activities such as picnics and movie outings lift spirits and add excitement to the group;

How do I know if a support group is right for me?

Whether coordinated by MSAA or other organizations, each support group represents its own unique community that may or may not be the right match for you. MSAA encourages anyone interested in joining a support group to speak with the group leader and ask questions about the group's function, approach, activities, membership, etc. This initial information should help you decide if you want to attend a meeting as a guest, before making a commitment to join.
