Barrier-Free Housing
MSAA owns and operates five barrier-free apartment complexes which provide accessible, affordable housing for physically disabled adults in an independent living environment. Each of the 125 one-bedroom or efficiency apartments is designed to meet the needs of people with MS or others with physical disabilities. Amenities include step-less entries, widened doorways for wheelchair passage, roll-under kitchen sinks and counters, lowered light switches, large roll-in showers with grab bars and a pull-down bench, air-conditioning, and other features to ensure a safe and comfortable living environment. The apartments are also very affordable as rent is subsidized through the government. As a result, rental payments are a portion of the tenant’s adjusted gross income.

Each complex includes a laundry room, keypad-entry security system, ample handicapped parking, and a community room for group activities such as game nights, birthday parties, and meetings. MSAA also provides on-site social services at each complex and transportation where available. The complexes are neither assisted living nor nursing homes so there are no on-site medical care or supportive services. Tenants are allowed to have daily visits by home heath aids or visiting nurses.

Eligibility
Candidates for residency must meet the following characteristic standards:

  1. A disability by government standards (physical impairment prohibiting one or more major life activities)
  2. Be 18 years or older
  3. Have an adjusted collective gross income that does not exceed 50% of the median for the county in which the complex is located

Availability and Location
Due to the popularity of these apartments, it is not unusual for each of the five housing complexes to have a waiting list for occupancy. However, vacancies do become available. Those interested in MSAA’s Barrier-Free Housing Program should contact the complexes directly and request an application for residency.
